Homework Help
Spelling Strategy for Difficult Words: First, have your child write the word correctly at the top of her paper. Then, have her to trace the word several times with her finger or pencil, saying each letter aloud as she traces it. Fold the top down so that the correctly spelled word is not visible. Ask your student to write the word from memory. Then, uncover the correctly spelled word to check for accuracy. Your student compares the word she wrote to the correctly spelled word (letter by letter) to find her mistake(s). Repeat the steps until your student is able to spell the word correctly. Another strategy that may help your student is learning to spell words backwards, as well as forwards. hinder; rednih patience; ecneitap
Reading
Sight Words:
Refer to the list of sight words by grade level on Useful Links. These are words commonly found in print and should be recognizable to students. Usually, decoding rules do not apply to these words.
Setting aside 20 minutes daily to read with your student in a specially designated location (at the kitchen table, on the living room sofa, at a bedroom desk, etc.) allows you to spend quality time with your student while he/she practices important reading skills.
Math
Help your child memorize basic Math facts through daily practice. See the Multiplication site on Useful Links for online, fun practice.
Check out these links to daily Math practice sheets for 4th and 5th grade students. Repetitive, accurate practice improves performance.
